Walking the Kerry Way
The Kerry Way (Irish: Slí Uíbh Ráthaigh) is a 214 km long circular trail that begins and ends in Killarney. The track can be done in any direction and be started at any stage. " Teaser" options for individual stages would especially make sense when staying in Black Valley (with a variety of more walks), at Lough Acoose, Glencar (with the option to climb Ireland's highest mountain), in Waterville (with the option of a 30 kms Loop Walk) and in Sneem (with two additional Loop Walks)
Distance to walk
~200-220 kms (depending on the options you choose)
7-9 days of walking)
Shorter options
If you have just a few days take only the most beautiful stages between Killarney and Glenbeigh (60 kms, 3-5 days), the Loop between Caherdaniel and Waterville or, when walking the opposite direction, the stages between Sneem and Waterville (each of these options about 30 kms in 2 days)
Difficulty
The walk is easy to moderate on most parts and in dry conditions, but can get demanding on wet and muddy ground. Some excursions/additional walking options mentioned in the text on the following pages can also be very demanding. Short portions of the Kerry Way unfortunately follow major roads which are narrow and very busy. Extra care is needed there.
Who can walk
Suits only well equipped and well prepared walkers! Rain gear and waterproof hiking boots are essential. As the track is not always clearly visible it is strongly recommended to bring good topographical Maps (see below) and a GPS device (incl. spare batteries). Mobile phone reception is not always available!
